Alabama Butterflies and Eastern Spiders:
Books and Photographs by Samford Faculty about Nature, Ecology, and the Natural World All Around Us
Exhibit: August 27 – October 4, 2010
Samford University Library hosts Alabama Butterflies and Eastern Spiders. The books and photographs are showcased by the main level grand staircase.
Alabama's ecology is exceptionally rich and diverse. Butterflies of Alabama, a book by coauthors W. Mike Howell (a Samford biology professor) and Vitaly Charny, provides detailed descriptions and photographs of Alabama butterflies, collected over a nine-year period. The book contains valuable introductory material on butterfly anatomy, life cycle, and taxonomy.
This book is a wonderfully readable and visually compelling account of a particularly beautiful aspect of Alabama's natural environment.
Included in this display are selections from two other faculty books:
Larry Davenports's
Nature Journal
Mike Howell and Ronald Jenkins'
Spiders of the Eastern United States: A Photographic Guide

A special feature of the display is a rotating series of gorgeous photographs taken by Vitaly Charny and available for viewing in a digital frame located just across from the display at the circulation desk. All three books can be purchased through Amazon, and Butterflies of Alabama and Nature Journal are available for purchase in the Samford University bookstore.
Closing date: October 4, 2010.
