About Government Documents at Samford University LibraryBackgroundThe Samford University Library has been a selective depository for United States government documents since 1884. In exchange for receiving these documents free of charge, we agree to provide free public access to these publications, regardless of format. We receive approximately 30% of all publications available through the
Federal Depository Library Program, basing our selections on the needs of the
Samford community as well as the residents of the 6th Congressional District
of Alabama. We also take into consideration the collections of the Birmingham
Public Library, Birmingham Southern College, and Jefferson State Community
College, three other Birmingham area depositories.
Our collection makes available
thousands of publications issued by all branches of the U.S. Government on a
multitude of topics. Publications vary widely in terms of format and intended
audience. Government publications received since 1976 are included in the online
catalog. We consider the strongest areas of our collection to be:
LocationThe Government Documents Unit is located on the 2nd floor, in the southeast wing
of the University Library. Most of our materials are available in open stacks and cabinets,
and are filed in Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) order.   Certain documents,
such as the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the Federal Register, the United States
Code and the Statutes at Large, are available in the
Beeson Law Library.
Hours The collection is accessible during regular library hours.
The Government Documents unit is staffed between 8am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
The Reference Department is available to assist patrons on nights and weekends.
Circulation Most documents circulate to the Samford community.
All interlibrary loan requests are filled at the discretion of the Documents Librarian. A few key NON-CIRCULATING titles are: the Decennial Census, the Congressional Record, the
Federal Register and the U.S. Serial Set.   Periodicals and Reference materials do not circulate.
Staff The Government Documents Collection is maintained and serviced by full
time staff members and dedicated student assistants.
To locate government information, try the Federal Government, State & Local Government, or International Governments topics. |
