Where do I find Bibliographies?
Bibliographies show up in all kinds of places - at the end of books and articles,
in encyclopedias and online databases, published as books or webpages.
For example, at the end of an entry in an encyclopedia, there is usually a short
bibliography to suggest further reading on the topic, as well as, to let you
know where the authors got their information. (see picture below)
At the end of most scholarly articles (and a few popular ones, too), you will
find a bibliography. Sometimes, it is called a works cited, sometimes it is
called footnotes or endnotes, either way it is an excellent source for other
articles on your topic. (see picture below)
Many books have a bibliography. You can tell if a book has one by clicking on the
Detailed Display button when you are in the catalog.(see picture below)
Once you have clicked on that button check out the Note fields. This area will usually
tell you if a bibliography or bibliographical references are included in the book.
Sometimes it will even tell you which pages the bibliography is on. (see picture below)
One place where bibliographies flourish is on the web. Websites represent an easy
way for people to publish lists of materials that they have collected on a
particular topic. Next time you are searching the web for information about a
particular topic, try adding the word bibliography to your search and see how this changes your
search results.(see picture below)
Now you know all about bibliographies!
Next time you need information on a particular topic, keep your eyes out for a
bibliography, whether you are searching online or in print. Bibliographies can
save time and lead to new sources.
