How do I Find Movie Reviews?

Movie Reviews are often indicative not only of how well a movie is received, but they also give information about the culture and the time period in which that movie was released. Here are some print resources to help you locate movie reviews. These resources will be particularly helpful for finding reviews of movies that were released before 1980. These materials are all located in the Reference Room on the 2nd Floor.

What You Can Expect to Find:
Magill's Cinema Annual/
Ref PN1993.3 M34
Magill's offers a synopsis of the film as well as information about it's reception and how it did at the box office. There is also a short cast and crew listing and a list of citations to reviews in other sources. There is a volume for each year (although you may want to check both the year that your film was released as well as the year after) and the films are organized alphabetically by title.
Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature/
Online (1890-1982) and behind the Reference Desk (1982-2006)
The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature covers articles from many popular periodicals such as Time, Newsweek and Life. Movie reviews can be found by going to the volume for the year the movie was released and looking up motion picture or moving picture reviews. The films will then be listed alphabetically by movie title. For moving pictures released before 1982, use the online version.
New York Times Index/
Behind the Reference Desk
The New York Times Index covers articles from the New York Times going back to 1851. Movie reviews can be found by going to the volume for the year the movie was released and looking up motion picture or moving picture reviews. The films will then be listed alphabetically by movie title.
