Although football had been played at Howard College prior to 1902, the first official football team was not formed until that year. The team was coached by Houston Gwin, a man from Auburn. Coach Gwin is pictured above on the 2nd row, 4th from the left.
There were only two games played that year. Howard College won its first intercollegiate football game against Marion Institute on October 26, 1902 with a score of 6-0. Howard lost its other game 26-0. It was played against Mississippi A&M, now Mississippi State University.
